    Purcell magneto-elastic swimmer controlled by an external magnetic field

    International audienceThis paper focuses on the mechanism of propulsion of a Purcell swimmer whose segments are magnetized and react to an external magnetic field applied into the fluid. By an asymptotic analysis, we prove that it is possible to steer the swimmer along a chosen direction when the control functions are prescribed as an oscillating field. Moreover, we discuss what are the main obstructions to overcome in order to get classical controllability result for this system

    A Middle Temperature Between the Two : Exploring Intermediate Remedies for the Failure to Comply With Maryland\u27s Eyewitness Identification Statute

    This article addresses what remedies should be available to a criminal defendant in Maryland who has been identified in an extrajudicial identification procedure that does not comply with the present statutory requirements. Part II of this article provides an overview of the present due process test for evaluating the admissibility of extrajudicial eyewitness identifications, the present Maryland iteration of that test, and alternatives to that approach that have been adopted in other jurisdictions. Part III reviews recent legislative reforms to extrajudicial identification procedures, which are required in Maryland as of January 1, 2016. Section IV.A of this article argues why a criminal defendant who has been identified in an extrajudicial procedure that does not comply with that legislative mandate should be afforded remedies short of suppression as a way to induce compliance with the legislative mandate and to better avoid wrongful conviction and the dire societal harms which occur when the true culprit is left free to re-offend. Section IV.B of this article provides an overview of the remedies a criminal defendant should be entitled to receive if that defendant shows that he or she was identified in an extrajudicial identification procedure that does not comply with the present statutory requirements

    Relaxation dynamics of fluid membranes

    We study the effect of membrane viscosity in the dynamics of liquid membranes{possibly with free or internal boundaries{ driven by conservative forces (curvature elasticity and line tension) and dragged by the bulk dissipation of the ambient fluid and the friction occurring when the amphiphilic molecules move relative to each other. To this end, we formulate a continuum model which includes a new form of the governing equations for a two-dimensional viscous fluid moving on a curved, time-evolving surface. The effect of membrane viscosity has received very limited attention in previous continuum studies of the dynamics of fluid membranes, although recent coarse-grained discrete simulations suggest its importance. By applying our model to the study of vesiculation and membrane fusion in a simpli ed geometry, we conclude that membrane viscosity plays a dominant role in the relaxation dynamics of fluid membranes of sizes comparable to those found in eukaryotic cells, and is not negligible in many large synthetic systems of current interest

    Modulated phases of a 1D sharp interface model in a magnetic field

    We investigate the ground states of 1D continuum models having short-range ferromagnetic type interactions and a wide class of competing longer-range antiferromagnetic type interactions. The model is defined in terms of an energy functional, which can be thought of as the Hamiltonian of a coarse-grained microscopic system or as a mesoscopic free energy functional describing various materials. We prove that the ground state is simple periodic whatever the prescribed total magnetization might be. Previous studies of this model of frustrated systems assumed this simple periodicity but, as in many examples in condensed matter physics, it is neither obvious nor always true that ground states do not have a more complicated, or even chaotic structure.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    Shape control of active surfaces inspired by the movement of euglenids

    We examine a novel mechanism for active surface morphing inspired by the cell body deformations of euglenids. Actuation is accomplished through in-plane simple shear along prescribed slip lines decorating the surface. Under general non-uniform actuation, such local deformation produces Gaussian curvature, and therefore leads to shape changes. Geometrically, a deformation that realizes the prescribed local shear is an isometric embedding. We explore the possibilities and limitations of this bio- inspired shape morphing mechanism, by first characterizing isometric embeddings un- der axisymmetry, understanding the limits of embeddability, and studying in detail the accessibility of surfaces of zero and constant curvature. Modeling mechanically the active surface as a non-Euclidean plate (NEP), we further examine the mechanism beyond the geometric singularities arising from embeddability, where mechanics and buckling play a decisive role. We also propose a non-axisymmetric actuation strategy to accomplish large amplitude bending and twisting motions of elongated cylindrical surfaces. Besides helping understand how euglenids delicately control their shape, our results may provide the background to engineer soft machine

    Control and navigation problems for model bio-inspired microswimmers

    Navigation problems for a model bio-inspired micro-swimmer, consisting of a cargo head and propelled by multiple rotating flagella or propellers and swimming at low Reynolds numbers, are formulated and solved. We consider both the direct problem, namely, predicting velocity and trajectories of the swimmer as a consequence of prescribed rotation rates of the propellers, and inverse problems, namely, find the rotation rates to best approximate desired translational and rotational velocities and, ultimately, target trajectories. The equations of motion of the swimmer express the balance of the forces and torques acting on the swimmer, and relate translational and rotational velocities of the cargo head to rotation rates of the propellers. The coefficients of these equations, representing hydrodynamic resistance coefficients, are evaluated numerically through a custom-built finite-element code to simulate the (Stokes) fluid flows generated by the movement of the swimmer and of its parts. Several designs of the propulsive rotors are considered: from helical flagella with different chirality to marine propellers, and their relative performance is assessed

    Lower Extremity Passive Range of Motion in Community-Ambulating Stroke Survivors

    Background: Physical therapists may prescribe stretching exercises for individuals with stroke to improve joint integrity and to reduce the risk of secondary musculoskeletal impairment. While deficits in passive range of motion (PROM) exist in stroke survivors with severe hemiparesis and spasticity, the extent to which impaired lower extremity PROM occurs in community-ambulating stroke survivors remains unclear. This study compared lower extremity PROM in able-bodied individuals and independent community-ambulatory stroke survivors with residual stroke-related neuromuscular impairments. Our hypothesis was that the stroke group would show decreased lower extremity PROM in the paretic but not the nonparetic side and that decreased PROM would be associated with increased muscle stiffness and decreased muscle length. Methods: Individuals with chronic poststroke hemiparesis who reported the ability to ambulate independently in the community (n = 17) and age-matched control subjects (n = 15) participated. PROM during slow (5 degrees/sec) hip extension, hip flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion was examined bilaterally using a dynamometer that measured joint position and torque. The maximum angular position of the joint (ANGmax), torque required to achieve ANGmax (Tmax), and mean joint stiffness (K) were measured. Comparisons were made between able-bodied and paretic and able-bodied and nonparetic limbs. Results: Contrary to our expectations, between-group differences in ANGmax were observed only during hip extension in which ANGmax was greater bilaterally in people post-stroke compared to control subjects (P ≤ 0.05; stroke = 13 degrees, able-bodied = −1 degree). Tmax, but not K, was also significantly higher during passive hip extension in paretic and nonparetic limbs compared to control limbs (P ≤ 0.05; stroke = 40 Nm, able-bodied = 29 Nm). Compared to the control group, Tmax was increased during hip flexion in the paretic and nonparetic limbs of post-stroke subjects (P ≤ 0.05, stroke = 25 Nm, able-bodied = 18 Nm). K in the nonparetic leg was also increased during hip flexion (P ≤ 0.05, nonparetic = 0.52 Nm/degree, able-bodied = 0.37 Nm/degree.) Conclusion: This study demonstrates that community-ambulating stroke survivors with residual neuromuscular impairments do not have decreased lower extremity PROM caused by increased muscle stiffness or decreased muscle length. In fact, the population of stroke survivors examined here appears to have more hip extension PROM than age-matched able-bodied individuals. The clinical implications of these data are important and suggest that lower extremity PROM may not interfere with mobility in community-ambulating stroke survivors. Hence, physical therapists may choose to recommend activities other than stretching exercises for stroke survivors who are or will become independent community ambulators

    Macroscopic contact angle and liquid drops on rough solid surfaces via homogenization and numerical simulations

    We discuss a numerical formulation for the cell problem related to a homogenization approach for the study of wetting on micro rough surfaces. Regularity properties of the solution are described in details and it is shown that the problem is a convex one. Stability of the solution with respect to small changes of the cell bottom surface allows for an estimate of the numerical error, at least in two dimensions. Several benchmark experiments are presented and the reliability of the numerical solution is assessed, whenever possible, by comparison with analytical one. Realistic three dimensional simulations confirm several interesting features of the solution, improving the classical models of study of wetting on roughness
